Description

During the Civil War, several anti-aircraft shelters were constructed in Roses to safeguard the civilian population from factional assaults by the Francoist navy and the fascist Italian air force. The only accessible refuge within the town center is the Plaça de la Pau Refuge. This shelter was strategically built, taking advantage of the natural terrain unevenness between specific streets. Historically, the refuge had three entrances: the primary one situated beneath the stairs leading to the Pujada de l'Escorxador in Plaça de la Pau. Another access point is located at the intersection of Carrer Josep Sabaté and Carrer del Capità Ariza, while the third entrance was positioned at the end of the Pujada de l'Escorxador, just before reaching Carrer Girona. Additionally, there was a respirator on the floor at the corner of Carrer Girona and Josep Sabater.

The Plaça de la Pau refuge, formerly known as the Escorxador, was rediscovered in 2002 during urbanization efforts in the area. The well-preserved condition of its corridors and municipal interest in its preservation prompted consolidation and restoration work. These efforts concluded in January 2007 with the inauguration of the revitalized space and the adjacent square, now named Plaça de la Pau in homage to the underlying refuge and the sculptural ensemble by artist Ció Abellí displayed on its walls.
