Introduction

Marmota marmota
We walk and hear some shrill whistles, they are alarm whistles emitted by the marmots, always alert to detect the danger.
The marmots are rodent mammals related to squirrels that live on the ground forming colonies. We will find them in sunny orientations in meadows and quarries, where there are excavations and galleries ("rooms") where they live and hide in case of danger.
They feed on herbs, berries, lichens, moss, roots and flowers, especially in summer, when they gain weight by preparing themselves for hibernation.
The marmot was extinct in the Pyrenees 15,000 years ago and was introduced again to the northern part of the Pyrenees, from the Vanoise area (French Alps) in the middle of the last century.
