Introduction

The range of environments and extraordinary biodiversity of the waters surrounding this small archipelago, located just a mile from the town of L’Estartit in the middle of the Costa Brava, make it a unique place and one the most emblematic of the Mediterranean.

The above-water part of this Natural Park is an archipelago comprising seven islets: Medellot, Meda Gran, Meda Petita, the Ferrenelles, Tascó Gros, Tascó Petit and Carall Bernat.

They have always been a point of interest to humankind, as shown by the remains of shipwrecks found in their waters. Pirates used them as a base for attacking the coast and they were of military and strategic importance from the Middle Ages to the end of the nineteenth century. They were inhabited until 1934.
