Introduction
You are on the promenade of l'Estartit and can take advantage to leave the route for a bit to go the jetty to see the Medes Islands closer at hand. The Medes are an archipelago of 7 islands; 2 large ones and 5 islets. They are situated just over 1 km from the coast of l’Estartit. Geologically, they are an extension of the Montgrí Massif. In other words, they are from the same geological epoch and are made of the same materials, that is to say, they form part of the same rocky stratum comprising carbonate rock. Historically, the Medes have been somewhere that has fascinated human beings and has encouraged them to go there, as shown by the remains of shipwrecks found in the surrounding waters. In fact, sunken Greek ships have been found there, and the islands have for centuries hidden remains that suggest they were used as a necropolis (a cemetery or burial place).
