Introduction

Ponds, irrigation channels and rice fields in the Baix Ter

This is a family route. It is completely flat and is ideal for doing by bike. This route passes through vineyards and rice fields and follows irrigation channels next to the Daró Vell between fields of crops. You can see perfect groves of black poplar as you follow the course of the Ter to its mouth.

On the final stretch of the route, you can stop at different ponds to see the wide variety of birds and amphibians, some of them, like the European pond turtle, at risk of extinction.

If you have the chance to do this route when the rice fields are flooded, the experience can be unforgettable.

Description

Ponds, irrigation channels and rice fields in the Baix Ter

This route starts from the information point at Les Basses d’en Coll, heading towards Can Tifa and Can Marcel•lo, and you are immediately surrounded by rice fields. You must take care on some paved sections you encounter before reaching the Mas Gelabert.

Close to the Mas Gelabert and the Serres de Pals golf course, you cross the Riera d’en Caixà, at the point where it joins the Rec del Molí de Pals and the Riera Nova, and you head towards the Daró Vell.

If you are lucky enough to be doing the route between the months of April and October and also in part of the winter, the rice fields will be flooded and you can enjoy the biodiversity of this unique ecosystem.

You now head towards the Mas Pla, with views of an outstanding black poplar grove and then straight away walk between perfectly aligned banana trees, just before encountering the course of the Ter.

Here, you turn to the right, heading towards the mouth of the river, flanked by riverside vegetation and with views of the Mongrí and the Montplà as a backdrop. You are close to the Gola del Ter for a short while, before heading back a few metres to continue towards la Fonollera.

The route now passes through Aleppo pine groves, ponds and irrigation channels heading towards rice fields again. At the Barraca d’en Quaranta, head to the left to follow the Rec for a few metres until you reach the Basses d'en Coll ponds and the starting point.
