Introduction

The Basses d’en Coll is a system of two ponds which form the mouth of the Rec del Molí (a channel which you will see further on in this route) into which the water from the rice fields of Pals flows. They are in the municipality of Pals and cover an area of some 50 hectares. They form part of the Partial Nature Reserve of the Marshes of the Baix Ter in the Montgrí, Medes Islands and Baix Ter Natural Park. They are an ideal place for birds to breed and for birdwatching. In particular it is a known breeding site for the little bittern (Ixobrychus minutus), a bird which nests in the Catalan speaking areas in the summer.
