Introduction

Cupresus serpervirens

This long-living tree can survive for over 500 years. It has hard-wearing wood which is easy to work and also lasts very well submerged in water without rotting. It is said that Noah’s Ark was made from it.

These woods of cypress and Aleppo pine originate in replanting work done in the 80s to help fix the inland dunes of Montgrí. The first replanting works, mainly with stone pine, maritime pine and Aleppo pine, were carried out at the start of the last century and directed by the forest engineer J. De Ferrer.

This replanting impedes the recovery of the area’s natural vegetation and at the same time increases the risk of fire.
