Introduction

Triturus helveticus

Another species of urodele (a tail-bearing amphibian) that can be found in Cabrerès is the palmate newt, which has very different biological habits compared to the salamander.

Unlike the salamander, the palmate newt spends part of the year in the water of ponds and streams, where it feeds and mates. During this period, females lay their eggs attached to aquatic plants. For the rest of the year, adult specimens are hard to see because they live on land, hidden under stones and in crevices.

The palmate newt mainly feeds on insects like flies and mosquitoes. Interestingly, during the coldest months of winter, it can hibernate under the ice.
