Introduction

The Arc de Bruguers is a geomorphological formation of great value within the red Garraf area. The materials forming the arch are Buntsandstein conglomerates (from the German “red earth stone”), dating from the Lower Triassic period. During the Triassic, Bruguers formed part of the supercontinent Pangea, under a hot and dry climate, with large rivers carrying sediments of mud and stones.

Once exposed to weathering, these compacted reddish materials begin to take on spectacular shapes due to erosion. The constant action of water and especially wind can create small honeycomb-like cavities called alveoli. When these cavities enlarge, they become tafoni (as seen here), and when perforated from both sides, they form a natural arch or bridge.
