Els Golluts de Ribes

Index card

The "Golluts", also known as dwarves or dwarfs, lived in the Ribes Valley well into the twentieth century. They had a stature below a meter and 20 centimeters and many of them with goiter (tumor developed in the neck due to dysfunction in the thyroid gland, probably as a result of the lack of iodine).
The "Golluts" lived in different villages of the Ribes Valley. There was an important community in Vila d'Amunt de Ribes de Freser, but also in Llosses, Ventolà, Batet and Tregurà.
Many times, these communities, lived in marginality and were treated with contempt. This marginality led them to misery and endogamy, which favored the disease and its perpetuation.
