Introduction
The "Golluts", also known as dwarves or dwarfs, lived in the Ribes Valley well into the twentieth century. They had a stature below a meter and 20 centimeters and many of them with goiter (tumor developed in the neck due to dysfunction in the thyroid gland, probably as a result of the lack of iodine). |
The "Golluts" lived in different villages of the Ribes Valley. There was an important community in Vila d'Amunt de Ribes de Freser, but also in Llosses, Ventolà, Batet and Tregurà. |
Many times, these communities, lived in marginality and were treated with contempt. This marginality led them to misery and endogamy, which favored the disease and its perpetuation. |
