Introduction
Before you is the castle-palace of Bellcaire. Located at the highest point of the village, this is a true historical medieval monument, which has been declared a cultural asset of national interest. This fortification was built by Ponç V, Count of Empúries, in the thirteenth century in a time of disagreements with the Crown, specifically with King Jaume II the Just who in the same period had the Castle of Montgrí built as a symbol of his power, as that way the symbol of his domination was visible from all of the domains of the County of Empúries.
Interestingly, the origin of the name of Bellcaire is thought to come from the word “Bellicadro” which means “well-made square” in reference to the shape of the castle of the Counts of Empúries.
