Introduction

At this point the eroded path reveals the dune’s sand, which comes from the beaches of the Gulf of Roses. The sand advanced over the years and threatened to swallow farmhouses and farmland until, in the early twentieth century, the decision was taken to stabilise it. Forestry activity turned the dune into the pine wood we can now enjoy. At the deepest points the piles of sand are 30 metres deep.
