Introduction
You are now looking out at Illa Mateua and can see lots of activity by yellow legged gulls (Larus michaelllis). This species of bird is also the most common on the Medes Islands, where it forms one of the most numerous colonies in the Mediterranean. There are white marks on the rocks, caused by these birds’ excrement. This phenomenon, along with the weather conditions with strong winds and high salinity shape the vegetation that can survive on this type of islet. Few species can survive in these tough conditions. The ones that can include nitrophyte plant species which have adapted to the large amounts of organic matter in the excrement of the sea birds.
