Introduction
The Gola is the name given to the mouth of the river Ter. In its final stretch, the Ter becomes a Mediterranean estuary, with the river’s fresh water mixing with sea water, creating very variable salinity and nutrient conditions. When the flow is low, the seawater penetrates upstream. It is also worth noting the importance of the supply of nutrients coming from the river for maintaining the marine habitats of the Medes Islands.
