Introduction

Along with Aleppo pines and stone pines, maritime pines (Pinus pinaster) were planted, some of which have grown to great heights. There is an example before you with a very straight reddish trunk some 25 metres tall. It is now slightly over a hundred years old and is starting to show signs of age. It has a very high crown, with sparse horitzontal and widely spaced branches. To distinguish it from other types of pine, if you look on the ground, you can see very long needles, the longest of all of the European pines, as well as its large cones which grow in groups of two or three.
