Introduction

The extraction of sand for construction taken from the sand mine of Mas Ponac, is the origin of a large and deep pond. It is the largest freshwater body in the Cap de Creus natural park. This pond had been used for bathing and been very badly served by illegal fishing and the introduction of foreign species such as the American water turtle, American mink, American red crab, and carp. This is a source of water used for drinking, both for livestock and wild animals such as wild boars, genets and foxes. It is also the habitat of reptiles and amphibians such as the grass snake (Natrix natrix) and the common toad (Bufo bufo).
