Introduction

At this point along the Trencada stream, you will see two great willows (Salix alba) with their elongated leaves which are white on the reverse. The heavily cracked, light gray bark contains salicin, a substance from which aspirin is synthesised. They are accompanied by two poplars (Populus nigra), with brilliant and rhomboidal leaves, tamarisk (Tamarix gallica) with small leaves in the form of a cypress, the grey willow (Salix cinerea) with male and female examples and the aloc or chaste tree (Vitex agnus-castus) with palmate leaves, the smaller siblings which inhabit these coastal watercourses whose waters only run intermittently. In autumn, they will all take on burnt red and yellowish hues, then lose their leaves to spend the winter in conditions for minimum evapotranspiration.
