Introduction
Alongside the canya americana mentioned earlier, another invasive plant from South America can be seen here, with a strong capacity for colonisation: herba de la pampa or plomalls (Cortaderia selloana). It was introduced as an ornamental plant in 1948, and its use in the area’s campsites is a clear example.
Well-drained, cool and deep soils are particularly favourable to this species. Rieres, due to their corridor effect and soil conditions, are especially suitable environments for invasive plants.
This species rapidly occupies land, displacing native flora and severely limiting associated fauna, resulting in a sharp decline in biodiversity. In the Remolar-Filipines Nature Reserve, it has been a serious problem. Control measures have combined mechanical removal with grazing until exhaustion and plant death.
