Introduction
Alnus glutinosa
You are on the side of the river Ter with riverbank woodland alongside the course of the river. These woods consist of deciduous trees which need abundant water and can tolerate temporary flooding. The most common species here include narrow-leafed ash, elm, alder (photo) and white willow.
The alder is characterised by its adaptations to living in damp or partially flooded areas, resulting in it having very strong wood, which was used for structures built in the water such as some buildings in Venice. Its bark was used in popular medicine to treat inflammations of the mouth, tonsils and gums, and its leaves, boiled and placed inside the shoes, are recommended for relieving sore feet.
