WHITE PINE FOREST

Index card

Introduction

Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis)

You are now surrounded by a small grove dominated by Aleppo pines. The Aleppo pine forest is a tree formation typical of Mediterranean environments with a calcareous substrate. In Catalonia it is one of the most common forest ecosystems.

This type of forest is an early phase of a natural succession -if it advances in maturity, it will become a holm oak grove. Disruptions such as logging or forest fires can keep the forest in these early stages.

This species of pine owes its latin name, halepensis, to the Syrian city of Aleppo, an important commercial hub during Ancient history.
