The oak

Index card

Introduction

On the left side of the path we can see the oak grove of Martinenc oak. In Catalonia there are different varieties of oak. On the one hand, the big-leaved oak (Quercus petrea) and the pine oak (Quercus robur) predominate, especially in Alta Ribagorça, Garrotxa, Ripollès and the wet areas of the Vall d'Aran, and on the other apart from the Martinenc oak, Quercus pubescens (photo), in the drier areas, as is the case where we are.

The Martinenc oak is not of much interest in carpentry, due to the lack of development and the tortuous shape of its trunks. However, like other oaks, it is used for burning, making charcoal and its bark for tanning leather.

On the other hand, we highlight the importance of the fruits of the oaks, the acorns, as they are an important source of energy and attract many varieties of animals that inhabit the forest.
