Coastal Pinewood (La Pineda)

Index card

Introduction

From the 16th century onwards, the transition from natural to agricultural land required controlling sand movement inland. Stone pines were planted on beach sand, which is still present underfoot today.

This pine belt was later urbanised with campsites such as El Toro Bravo. Being part of a protected area, the Pineda del Francès and the Remolar have benefited from better management.

Pinewoods support high-value plant communities such as orchids, leading to their protection under the Xarxa Natura 2000.
