Maresma wetland Bird Hide

Index card

Introduction

The estany del Remolar and the maresmes de les Filipines form one of the most important wetland systems in the Llobregat delta. The estany del Remolar lies beyond, near the airport, connecting to the maresma via the braç de la Vidala.

Water levels vary seasonally. Dry summers may leave the wetland dry, while easterly storms raise sea levels and allow seawater inflow. Excess rainwater can also drain to the sea. Levels are regulated by sluices.

Vegetation includes rush beds, wet meadows, salicornia communities, tamarisk groves and coastal pinewoods, with invasive reed beds along channel margins.

Winter hosts high concentrations of ducks and waders; spring and summer see breeding species such as black-winged stilts and little bitterns. Fish include eels and fartets, and freshwater turtles are also present.
