Introduction
We are close to the torrent de la Verdera, one of the last refuges for these trees adapted to cooler environments. Agriculture first, by clearing trees to gain farmland, and climate change later, have made their survival difficult.
This is the cerrioid oak, a hybrid between oaks from wetter mid-mountain environments and Valencian oaks from drier areas. Oaks and holm oaks host the greatest associated biodiversity. Fungi, insects, birds and even small mammals use them as shelter and breeding sites. It would not be unusual to find a genet, tawny owl or hoopoe nesting in a cavity of an old oak.
