Introduction

This is a group of three artificial lagoons covering an area of 31 hectares, located very close to Viladecans within the Parc Agrari del Baix Llobregat.

They are the result of human activity. Until the 1970s, this area was used for market gardening and vegetable cultivation, like the surrounding land. From that decade onwards, aggregates (sand and gravel) began to be extracted from the agricultural subsoil. Large pits were excavated to remove the gravel and sand deposits laid down by the Llobregat river and the streams that formed the delta, materials that were highly sought after in the construction industry.

Today, as a refuge for birdlife, the site forms part of the European Union’s Natura 2000 Network and the Espais Naturals del Delta del Llobregat, together with the estany del Remolar, la Murtra, the Reguerons area, the estany de la Ricarda and the river’s natural spaces. It is also designated as a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA).

You can walk around the bassa gran or head towards the bassa petita, although in spring and summer access is restricted to protect wildlife.
