Cartridge grasslands, tree heather and broom

Introduction

Here we find plants resulting from the abandonment of agricultural land or from post-fire evolution. Carrizo grass and broom are plants that adapt to open spaces in any environment. Carrizo is the native relative of the South American pampas grass, which is causing serious problems in Delta areas due to its invasive capacity.

Tree heather (photo) is favoured by the acidic nature of the soil, caused by the schist-type rock you can see (dark, laminated rock).

Heather is a tall shrub, up to 3 m high, with small linear leaves of 2–3 mm and also small, whitish, bell-shaped flowers. It flowers very abundantly and with a sweet scent in early spring (in contrast to winter heather: from calcareous soils, lower-growing and with pink flowers in October).

Its wood is very hard and produces excellent charcoal. From the stumps, after slow drying, very good smoking pipes are made. Today it is dried and processed to make fences and visual screens.
