Terraces and Dry-Stone Walls

Index card

Introduction

In mountainous terrain such as this, large stepped terraces were built to level hillsides and slopes, retaining sediments with dry-stone walls, constructed without any cement or mortar.

These walls can still be found today hidden within the dense forest cover. They are testimony to centuries of mountain agriculture carried out around the castle. The most recent crop that can still be identified is the olive tree.
