Ermita Santa Maria de Sales

Index card

Introduction

This Romanesque chapel was built in the 12th century (documented in 1141) on the remains of a 2nd-century BC Roman villa. In the Middle Ages, it housed a small monastery of deodates, women dedicated to God.

The chapel has undergone modifications over the centuries. It consists of a nave with a barrel vault (Romanesque), a pentagonal apse (Gothic), and a porticoed entrance (Renaissance) with a two-pitched roof supported by pillars.

The interior is decorated with Gothic, Renaissance, and modern murals, all recently restored by the Local Architectural Heritage Service of the Diputació de Barcelona.

Currently, and until restoration of the interior and paintings is complete, the chapel hosts a semi-permanent exhibition: Sales: place, chapel, and history of Viladecans, viewable during guided tours. The chapel is part of the Viladecans Museum facilities and is accessible for people with reduced mobility.
