They are very important because they are at the water's edge, with their deep roots retaining the earth protecting it from the water current and its erosion.
Everywhere many alder trees have been cut to gain arable space, and unwillingly they have broken the defenses and erosion problems have begun that makes the river to eat its margins and expand its ‘bed’.
