Introduction
The exploitation of cork from cork oak became a very important activity in the province of Girona between the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly from the discovery of the monk Dom Pérignon of its properties for the manufacture of caps.
It was well paid, since initially all work was manual and labor force was needed, so bigger fortunes were made with this business.
Cork is still being exploited in the Gironès. The peel is made every 9 years at the end of August. It is necessary to know how to extract the loaves and paint the undressed strips later not to damage the tree.
