Introduction
Parnassius apollo |
This flagship species of the Papilionidae family lives in the high mountains of the Pyrenees and the Pre-Pyrenees. The mountain Apollo butterfly is protected by the Berne Convention and is part of the Special Protection Regime List of Species. |
It is a species threatened both by the abuse of collectors and by the increase in temperature due to climate change, since it likes low temperatures. |
It is a large butterfly, between 7 and 9 cm big. Its short antennas with the black end, help it to navigate and are its main organ of its sense to touch. |
As a curiosity, birds do not hunt this butterfly thanks to its deceptive color with red spots, which seem to indicate that it is a poisonous insect. |
