Introduction
The sanctuary of Mare de Déu de Núria is located almost 2,000 meters high, surrounded by emblematic peaks such as Puigmal, Noucreus, Noufonts and Finestrelles. The "cremallera" train takes people up to the sanctuary since 1931. |
Presided over by a neo-Romanesque church, it has a hotel and 4 houses dedicated to the saints Jeroni, Antoni, Josep and Gil. The sanctuary over the centuries has been a hospital, hostel, a place of pilgrimage and even a prison. |
Next to the sanctuary we can visit the fountain and the chapel of Sant Gil, built in 1615. |
The image of the Mare de Déu de Núria that today venerates, dates from the 12th or 13th century. It is craved in walnut wood of Romanesque style. |
The text next to it says that St. Gil, a penitent, arrived at Núria around the year 700 and there he hid the image of Virgin Mary, along with other utensils such as a cross, a bell and a pot. These objects were found in 1079 by a pilgrim from Dalmatia named Amadeu. |
In 1931, in the room number 202 of the hotel, it was drafted what would be the Statute of Autonomy of Catalonia that was ratified in the polls on August 2nd, 1931 and approved by the Cortes Generales on September 9th, 1932. |
