Introduction
Phalacrocorax carbo
The large number of caves and holes in slopes right on the coast are an ideal habitat for breeding pairs of cormorant. They occupy the nest in January and cover it with a range of plant materials, including sea weed. Their feathers are not waterproof and so they can often be seen perched on the rocks with their wings spread out in the sun. It is very common in the winter when individuals come from central Europe.
The cormorant is a fishing bird which feeds exclusively on fish it catches, diving to depths of up to 30 metres often in areas connected to meadows of Posidonia oceanica.
