Description
Humankind and nature on the coast of l’Escala
From the starting point at Cala Montgó, head towards the centre of l’Escala following the route of the GR 92. The first place of special interest is facing the Illa Mateua where the views invite you to stop and admire the scenery.
The route winds its way uphill among pines and open spaces, to where kermes oak and rosemary become dominant, sometimes sharing with orchids, lilies and daffodils. You now walk along the top of the cliffs at the beach of Salpaig and visit old bunkers very close to the port of Clota Grossa.
Next, you will walk around Cala dels Riells, where the promenade is dedicated to the Little Prince. This stretch runs right next to the coast in a built-up area.
You now come to Cala de la Creu where some old fishermen’s huts are still preserved. The views of Cap de Creus and the Pyrenees will captivate you and accompany you almost to the end of the route.
The route crosses the Rec del Molí canal. From here, follow the route of the bike track which leads you along the beaches of el Rec, el Portitxol, el Moll Grec and Empúries. All along this stretch, you walk next to the sea, among pine trees that have been planted here and unique vegetation typical of coastal dunes.
Diverted and accompanied by this stunning scenery, you will reach Sant Martí d’Empúries and the end point of the itinerary almost without realising.
