Introduction

Fontanilles is a small spread-out village which, despite some modern second homes, has kept its rural character. The twelfth-century Church of Sant Martí presides over the group of houses. It is in the Romanesque style, although it underwent alterations to fortify it which doubled its original height. It has a single nave with a semi-circular apse, with a window with a double bevelled opening. The doorway was also replaced in the eighteenth century by the current one. The baroque bell gable with four openings stands out on the front.

Further on, descending the Carrer de l’Església, you will find the location known as the Plaça Vella, a beautiful spot where the old fountain is preserved which used to supply water to the village until water was supplied directly to the houses.
