Introduction
Pinus halepensis
You are now walking through a grove of Aleppo pine, the most common forest formation in this area.
Aleppo pine forests are a forest formation which are typical of Mediterranean environments with calcareous substrates. In particular, it is worth noting the twisted shapes of some examples of it, which have been battered by the effects of the tramuntana.
This is one of the most common forest environments in Catalonia. This species of pine owes its name and its scientific name – halepensis – to the Syrian city of Aleppo, an important trading centre in ancient times.
