Introduction

Rhinechis scalaris

This snake is very common. It is harmless and is easy to identify as it has two parallel black stripes on its back. It can reach up to 180 cm in length, although it does not normally exceed a metre and a half.

Although it is a ground snake, it also climbs trees and shrubs in search of birds’ nests. It normally feeds on mice, shrews, Mediterranean pine voles, and similar animals and the adults can catch young rabbits and rats.

Although it is harmless, it reacts very aggressively if attempts are made to capture it, snorting and whistling loudly, even biting angrily.
