Introduction
The European bee-eater (Merops apiaster) is one of the most beautiful birds in Catalonia, and while this is a matter of taste, its colours will undoubtedly leave you open-mouthed.
This bird breeds in Catalonia in the summer and winters in Africa, so it can only be seen here from April to October at most. Its name refers to its insect-based diet, principally bees and wasps which it catches on the wing. The way it makes its nest is also interesting. It builds tunnels of up to 2 metres in length which you will certainly see on the slopes of this route.
The fact it feeds on bees has never pleased bee-keepers who do not look kindly on the presence of these birds which might eat their bees.
