Introduction
You are now facing Illa Mateua and can see lots of activity by yellow legged gulls (Larus Michaelllis). This species of bird is also the most common on the Medes Islands, where it forms one of the most numerous colonies in the Mediterranean.
There are white marks on the rocks, caused by the excrement of these birds. This phenomenon, along with weather conditions with strong winds and high salinity shape the vegetation that can survive on this type of islet.
Few species can survive in these tough conditions. The ones that can survive these conditions include nitrophyte plant species which are adapted to the large amount of organic matter from the sea birds’ excrement.
