Sinkholes and cisterns

Introduction

The use of these sinkholes and cisterns is proof of the ingenuity the people who made use of the Montgrí Massif had to employ to be able to have water available all year round, especially in periods with little rain.

To the right of the track, half hidden by the trees, there is a sinkhole, a small natural oval cavity, which, after making them watertight and preparing them, the farmers and shepherds who moved around these areas used as somewhere to store the little rainwater that falls in this area throughout the year.

Further on, also on the right, you can see an area of carbonate rocks where small galleries and holes have formed and where pools of water also usually form, which were also jealously protected to be able to make use of the little water they contained. Water, always such a prized asset!
