Introduction

It is also called Santa Maria de Fanals, started construction in the 15th century and finished in the 17th-18th century, in contrast to the old Romanesque church of Fanals d'Amunt (linkat) that we will also visit in this itinerary. It is a church with a single ship with semicircular apses and side chapels. The vaults are edges. The facade shows a lowered arch door, without decoration, where we can see the date of 1774 and an anagram of Virgin Mary. Above, there is an empty niche and a rose window. The bell tower is quadrangular and has remained unfinished. It was built during the 18th century (1764-1774). The rugged morphology of the area where the old church was located led from the 16th century an expansion of the settlement towards Fanals d'Aro, closer to the coast and better communicated, which made the construction of this new temple essential.
