Introduction

Erica arborea (photo)

This shrub, with its persistent, small leaves, blooms in pink and white blossoms from March to July and can grow up to 4 metres high. It will accompany us almost all along the way.

It is a shrub that, together with the Cistus Albidus, dominates the undergrowth of the scattered cork trees, which have been depleted by deforestation and forest fires. It thrives in acid and colder soils.

Its hard wood makes very good charcoal. After slow drying, the trunks are used to make nice smoking pipes. Nowadays it is dried and used for fences and visual screens.
