Introduction
Let's take a look at the surrounding landscape.
The Miocene clay at Els Hostalets is considered a Space of Geological Interest.
In the Miocene, avalanches of mud and clay came down, torrents and floods that deposited sediment and animals, at times violently. Over time, the sediment turned into stone and some animal remains became fossilised, meaning that we can now discover and study them, as happened with Pau.
Clay is an impermeable material that has preserved fossils, although it makes the land ideal for landfills, such as ours at Can Mata. Clay has also been used to make bricks for many years.
