Introduction

Can you see the farmhouse to the left of the landfill with a chapel by its side? That's Can Mata de la Garriga, the name of a farm dating from 1855, with medieval origins. It is the head of a large farming area and has its own neo-Gothic chapel devoted to Our Lady of the Rosary. It is one of the most important in the municipality.

Can Mata is the name of the landfill and also of a large paleontological site. Apart from Pau, other primate holotypes have also been discovered:

Anoiapithecus brevirostris (a hominid primate characterised by the profile of its face, which is not very prominent, hence the name "brevirostris")

Pliopithecus canmatensis (a small primate with no surviving descendants)

Other discoveries have enabled us to know more about previously identified species from other sites, such as the remains of the Dryopithecus fontani, which showed us what its face was like.

The landfill has allowed us to excavate a large amount of earth and uncover all the fossils buried therein.
