Introduction
Let's go back to the origin of our route on palaeontology and the Miocene. This is the period in the history of the Earth from 23 to 5 million years ago. The climate in this area, including the Vallès-Penedès basin, was like today's subtropical zones, with abundant rainfall and high temperatures.
This long period can be divided up into sub-periods based on the type of fauna discovered. This is what happened, for example, with the finding of the Hippotherium primigenium catalaunicum (a small horse), which enabled us to draw a line between the Aragonian period (18-12 million years ago with a wet climate and dense forests); and the Vallesian period (12-9 million years ago, with a drier climate and more open spaces).
