Introduction
Behind the apse of the Church of Santa Maria dels Prats de Rei lies a small burial necropolis, comprising six slab tombs and two stone sarcophagi, dating from the 4th to the 9th centuries.
These tombs were discovered during excavations in 1972 in front of the rectory, and were later moved here for preservation.
The findings confirm the presence of a very early Christian community in this location, as a Paleochristian funerary slab from the 4th or 5th century was unearthed. This indicates that in the municipium Sigarrense, the ancient Roman name of Prats de Rei, there was already an early Christian church, linked to local elites who adopted Christianity after the Roman period.
