The dunes of Mataró

Introduction

The dunes of Varador beach were shaped in 2000 using sand from the beach itself, as part of the “Project to restore and improve Mataró's seafront”, with the aim of protecting the dune area with species native to the Mediterranean coast.

Conditions on the dunes are very harsh and only a certain group of specialised plants (known as psammophytes) manage to adapt.

The presence of these plants indicates that the beaches are in good ecological condition, and they are vital for holding and stabilising the dunes and serve as a refuge for insects, reptiles and birds.

Notable species include marram grass (Ammophila arenaria, pictured) and the sea daffodil (Pancratium maritimum).
