Introduction
Robinia pseudoacacia
We are next to the Torrent de les Acàcies, and the name probably refers to the trees you can see on your right, the false acacia. It is a species native to North America and considered one of the 100 worst invasive plants in Catalonia, with a significant ecological impact on riverside woodland. Since 2011 its sale, transport and cultivation have been banned.
It was introduced to Spain in the 18th century, although it spread widely across Europe at the end of the 19th century. Initially used as an ornamental tree, it was later planted as a forest tree for its timber, and occasionally to stabilise embankments.
The wood is extremely hard and resistant to rot. It used to be widely used for railway sleepers. It was also used for garden steps.
