Exploring the La Ciutadella site is a must for anyone in Roses. Recognized as a historical and artistic centre since 1961, the citadel preserves vestiges from various historical periods. The military fortress, featuring the impressive Sea Gate, is a Renaissance-style structure constructed in 1543.

The significant archaeological site within the citadel includes:

  • The remnants of the Hellenistic district in the Greek settlement of Rhode, reaching its peak in the 4th and 3rd  century BC.
  • A Roman villa dating from the 2nd century BC and 6th century AD.
  • A paleochristian necropolis.
  • Various Visigothic buildings.
  • The Lombard Romanesque monastery of Santa Maria, dating back to the 11th century, and remains of the fortified medieval town.
  • Remains of military buildings from the 16th century.
  • A Museum offering insights into the history and heritage of Roses from prehistory to modern times.
  • An Exhibition Hall.

Embarking on a guided tour of the Citadel provides a condensed history lesson within a unique area, complete with clear signage. Family cultural activities and guided tours are available.
