Introduction
Approximately 45 million years ago, the Montseny and the Guilleries represented the continent and in the Tavertet area there was the sea. On this sea, which was the lower part and is now the higher part of the territory, the different materials were deposited and sedimented.
Two distinct layers can be distinguished by color: the red layer formed by materials of continental origin (clays and red sandstones) with the presence of oxygen, and another gray layer formed by calcareous materials (marls, sandstones and limestones) sedimented in the bottom of the sea.
The different marine oscillations deposited layers of materials of different composition and hardness. This difference in the hardness of the materials is what causes, due to the erosive discordance, that what used to be the seabed, are now the elevated parts of the cliff of Tavertet, on which we are.
